I know it's a lame achievement but I felt kinda proud of myself that I'm finally, after 3 tries yesterday, able to swim 1 full lap without stopping in freestyle! James said I wasn't able to do so on previous tries because I wasn't relaxing and wasted too much energy splashing water ferociously like a mad dog (Can dogs swim, by the way? I read in "Mengapa Begini, Mengapa Begitu" books - miss those cute books- and I recalled that they can; Niki even termed the swimming technique where you rescue people the 'gaya anjing' or doggie style). And I was nursing a cold (still am). And I was wearing infra-red goggles (not infra-red but red goggles, such that the effect's similar to a night vision IR goggles - anyway I swim after dark) so my vision's obscured and water kept sipping in through the loose rubber of the red goggle. Plus, I guess my mom's gan-cheong-ness rubbed off me somewhat.
My whole family's going to be here tomorrow! Finally the whole family's here; due to my convocation. Without me actually soaking in the full capacity of it all, I've finished my (basic) education! Hurrah! Err...actually I'm not that excited about graduating, more of nerves maybe? I've come to an understanding about the old folks' constant saying that studying is the most carefree days of your life because you don't have to think of work.
Met with Martha yesterday, she gave me some chocolates from Australia (as usual my siblings finished more than half of it, leaving me with three miserable packets) and a Me-To-You teddy bear wearing the graduation robe (ok the bear's naked actually but it sported an academic hat). We passed by this Ian Thorpe poster and James was saying Ian's his fave athlete and Martha said Ian's actually gay (or bi). I almost couldn't believe it. None of my business actually but come to think of it, I've never detected any gay-ish behaviour (so maybe I didn't pay much attention to him but all the same I've bought Girlfriend magazine before and read that Mr Thorpe had got a girlfriend). Well Martha studies in Sydney so she probably knew much more gossip on Australian celebs. My gay-dar (gay radar) isn't as good as I thought, then.
So, we were discussing on about how all the good men are either taken or gay (isn't it pathetic?). Martha said that Indonesian guys are a better lot than most other guys. I don't know whether to concur or not but we agreed that Singapore tends to make guys (and probably girls) less desirable. This is supported by Marissa's experiences in LA; she claimed Indonesian guys (and guys in general) in LA are much nicer than the ones here. Apparently the opinion is also seconded (or third-ded) by Martha's friends (who are now working here), according to Martha. So we forgo that idle talk altogether and proceeded to more concrete events. And then we discussed movies like Initial D (which James had watched twice 'cos I dunno what, and I haven't 'cos I need to wait for Marissa to come and watch it together with her). James quipped in that he wanted to visit Edison's shop and get his signature (for what?). But in truth, Marissa's the one who's going HK to see her "beloved". I reckon we'll go Causeway Bay everyday when we do visit Hong Kong. I'll be going there to see Ie Ching He too, miss her so much! She's my fave aunt (probably the only aunt I really like) because she is just such a genuinely nice person.
Edited: HK's really hot...the whole place felt like a microwave oven the day we arrived.
